The Cape Institute for Agricultural Training: Elsenburg was established in 1898 as the first agricultural college of its kind in South Africa. The college has been associated with Stellenbosch University since 1926, bringing training to students whilst keeping abreast of modern agricultural developments.

The illustration of a person coddling a young Steenbok found in the vineyards of the Cape symbolizes the institution’s sensitivity towards both the environment and its students. The anchor around its neck pays homage to the original crest of the college and communicates security, stability, and being grounded.
